web2proof – Participants and partners draw a positive balance

The joint project under the theme “web2proof” attracted more than 200 participants to the Fogra booth at drupa 2008. A daily overview of participation can be found in the figure below.

Participants as well as web2proof partners offered predominantly positive feedback. Hartmut Zick (from Konradin Heckel), for example, stated: “The web2proof project was well-received and very well-prepared”.

The possibility for the users to test data correction and -preparation software, proof- and digital printing systems as well as softproofing solutions free of charge and independently has been used quite differently. Basically, three main areas of interests have been identified. The first group of attendees showed the most interest in the new proofing systems, where the focus lies in new printer models as well as the incorporation of the new Ugra/Fogra Media Wedge CMYK V3. Attendees of the second group were mainly focussed on the latest Softproofing solutions using either the proof, digital prints or the web2proof offset test form as the reference. Attendees of the third group primarily visited the web2proof data partners in order to see how to solve the pertinent data problems, which has been implemented in the web2proof test form.

Often, it has been the case that the attendees asked for individualized test form to take away in order to analyze their own workflow.

“I really enjoyed the great collaboration, and on behalf of Fogra, I would like to sincerely thank all web2proof partners. I am looking forward to future projects – certainly before the next drupa in 2012”, says Andreas Kraushaar.

Project web2proof

Fogra is organising a joint project at drupa under the theme ‘web2proof’. At the Fogra stand, trade fair visitors shall be offered the possibility of generating a customised test form using a web-interface. It comprises typical objects such as images, graphics and text representing different problem categories categories (spot colours, overprints, transparencies, etc.), which reflect nowadays workflow at its best. Having the goal of mimicking the daily challenges as closely as possible, special control elements such as the Ghent Working Group test elements will be used.

It is the task of the web2proof partners in the workflow management arena, to correct and prepare the customised PDF files towards a “flattened and CMYKonly” print ready PDF. The output intend will be FOGRA39, i.e. offset printing on gloss or matt coated paper (screen ruling according to 60/cm). The processed file is then available for output to all other web2proof partners.

In this manner, the interested party can view his test form as a softproof, a contract proof, a digital print out or just all of them in the preferred combination. Last but not least, it is possible to obtain production print sheets of a predefined test form printed according to ISO 12647-2 from a printing machine manufacturer for comparison or proof simulation. In the process, one can get information about important aspects of the ProcessStandard Offset Printing (PSO) and the proof which conforms to it.

The partners demonstrate the possibilities of state of the art pre-flighting and PDF correction technologies, how high quality soft, hard proof and digital printing solutions and thus how standardisation is working from the design stage up to the output.
